Michael Retterath is a Managing Director in L.E.K. Consulting’s Healthcare and Life Sciences Performance Improvement practice. Based in New York, Michael has more than 25 years of experience as a senior executive and strategy consultant with biopharma, medtech, and healthcare services companies in both the US and Europe. He has led enterprise transformations spanning portfolio strategy, capability building, operating model redesign, performance improvement programs and post-merger integration.
Prior to joining L.E.K., Michael served as Chief Business Officer and Chief Financial Officer at Spark Therapeutics (a member of the Roche Group). In these roles, he led enterprise strategy, finance, business development, and IT, and oversaw a multi-year portfolio review and a comprehensive organizational transformation to support the company’s next phase of growth and align with Roche’s strategic priorities. He also led a major cost initiative that delivered more than $200 million in operating expense savings and played a central role in the Spark–Roche integration.
Earlier, Michael was a partner at Bain & Company, where he advised biopharma and pharma services clients on portfolio and commercial strategy, organizational transformations and post-merger integrations and built extensive experience in commercial diligence for corporate and private equity investors. He previously held senior positions in Europe at Sanofi and Boehringer Mannheim (now Roche).
Michael holds an MBA from INSEAD, a Master of Science in Molecular Biology and a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Waterloo. He is fluent in French and German and has worked extensively across North America and Europe.
