International benchmarking helps organisations evaluate the performance of Australian supply chains, and was a key action called for by industry during the development of the National Freight and Supply Chain Strategy in Australia.

Comparing how different commodities reach their destination – whether in Australia or international export markets – helps us consider how we might make adjustments to improve outcomes and increase competitiveness for Australian producers.

In August 2019, the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development engaged L.E.K. Consulting to undertake a pilot benchmarking study, developing a methodology and comparing Australia’s waste and wine supply chains with relevant international comparators.

This pilot study is a first step as we look to further develop our understanding of Australia’s supply chain performance, and expand the approach to other supply chains from 2020 to 2022.
