Background
Few industries have been able to reap the benefits of digitization more than healthcare, from enabling telemedicine that lets patients interact with their providers remotely to empowering providers to capture large anonymous datasets so they can make more informed patient recommendations.
So when an investment firm that is both a member of the World Bank Group and the largest global development institution focused exclusively on the private sector in developing countries needed help developing — and piloting — a scalable digital health platform for one of its portfolio companies in Sri Lanka, it turned to L.E.K. Consulting for digitization support.
Approach
We kicked off the project by conducting interviews with key stakeholders in the company’s pharma distribution and hospitals businesses and running an internal survey to learn how its employees viewed the organization’s digital status. We also held a goals-setting workshop to define the case for change, introduced a digital organization design framework and discussed related design criteria. And we held talks around the various stakeholder journeys that would be involved, while also prioritizing both the organization’s pain points and the related potential solutions.
Results
In just 10 weeks, we developed and delivered to the client’s portfolio company a complete digital transformation strategy and related implementation roadmap, as well as a change management strategy, for its pharma distribution and hospitals businesses.
We also delivered to the client a replicable digital health strategy advisory toolkit that leveraged relevant intellectual property from the World Bank and the client itself. The toolkit included detailed frameworks and templates that the client could use to help its other portfolio companies identify baseline needs and develop digital health strategy and transformation plans, irrespective of where in the world they were based.
In other words, the L.E.K. team not only helped improve healthcare for patients in one developing country but also provided a critical tool for improving healthcare in developing countries around the world.
